HISTORY OF CAPE TOWN
Cape town was first established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. Initially, it was used as a refreshment station for ships traveling to and from the East Indies. In 1687, the Dutch granted Cape town its town charter and it became the capital of the Dutch Cape Colony. This colony later became part of the Union of South Africa in 1910. During the apartheid era, Cape town was a major centre for racial segregation. The city was declared a “whites only” zone and those of other races were restricted from living there. In the early 1990s, with the dismantling of the apartheid system, Cape town began to become more diverse.
